What Objectives does Mercenary Miniatures have planned for The New Year?

What Objectives does Mercenary Miniatures have planned for The New Year?

All of us at Mercenary Miniatures would like to wish everyone a happy and safe new year and share our objectives and plans for the upcoming

As our company grows and our ambitions follow suit we have a few things in the pipeline coming up for the gaming community.

Objective Markers

Have you ever questioned if your troops are wondering why they do what they do? Does Hans turn to Fritz and ask what’s the point of fighting over an enormous die? Or what purpose does high command have in mind when they send us out to secure that poker chip that is large enough to serve as King Arthur’s round table?

I know we have, but that’s also because we have a tendency to sit at our work stations marching our freshly painted troops around and simulating a battle complete with add “Pew Pew” sound effects. That’s why we worked on a solution.

Objective Markers! We will be releasing a set of three objective markers mid January so that your troops can fight over supplies and more relevant. They will be released in packs of three or sold individually.

First we will release a single set that will cover any game system set after the industrial age. We will then move on to some specific objective markers for games like bolt action and Warhammer 40,000. These will be designed around army themes, like having Panzerfausts for the Germans. As well as universe specific ones, like plasma generators for 40k.

Game Boards

We also plan on releasing a couple new game boards to tour the tournament scene this year. The sub pen that debuted at Adepticon 2015 and has been at every event we’ve been at since will be redone. With the new skill sets that we have acquired and technologies learned this table with the our crowning glory for some time to come. A new trench heavy gritty no mans land scared battlefield will be showing up at some point too. The last currently planned board for this year is a heavy urban board that will have some surprises in store for those that play on it.

These boards do not have a release date and we don’t want to promise their appearances at any particular events because we want to make sure that these boards are as playable and memorable for everyone who plays on them.

Out of the current boards, the Sub Pen and Pacific Island will be available for sale. If you are interested drop us an email at or talk to one of us at the upcoming this year (Polar Vortex, Adepticon, World at War, and Operation Sting to name a few)

Internally we have been refining our production processes to ensure the highest quality product reaches our customers.

Thank you for taking the time to read, and we hope to see you out at the tabletops!

Sneak peek of things to come

As we come up to the Dragonfall Bolt Action event, the team at Mercenary Miniatures is hard at work preparing some beautiful objective markers for the event.

The event at Dragonfall rocking the weekend of October 15th and 16th has many events in store for all who stop by. Mercenary Miniatures’ own Chris Pawl and Mark Halberg will be running the Warhammer 40k and Bolt Action events respectively.

There are still a few spots available for event at Dragonfall, get your tickets now before it is too late!

The bolt Action event will be the event of many firsts! First Dragonfall Bolt Action tournament, first (that we know of) Second Edition Bolt Action event, and first Attrition format tournament!

The Attrition format is the brainchild of Aaron Jobgen, one of the members of Chicago Bolt Action and was originally developed for a long term campaign intended to be played over many many months, Aaron and Mark teamed up to adapt the rules for a tournament setting and will be running the event on October 16th.

Bolt Action Attrition

Finally, here is the sneak peek the post title promised! It is a shot of the first objective marker painted for Dragonfall. This objective marker is a stack of weapon crates tastefully and partially covered by a tarpaulin, which is being weighed down by some bricks.

These objective markers will come in packs of three unique markers all themed around the idea of supply caches and will also be available individually if you want to expand your collection!

Stay tuned for the launch of these objective markers in our online store!

Bolt Action Dragonfall Tournament: Attrition

Dragonfall is coming October 16th 2016!

Registration is still open for events!
Registration Link

Below is are the details of the event, missions will be announced the day of the event.
Note: These rules may be tweaked slightly for clarity prior to the event.

Operation Dragonfall

Commander, on the morning of October 16th you will marshal your forces against our enemy. We are sending you to the front where you must push the enemy back. However, you will be beyond the reach of our logistic teams and we will be unable to provide any reinforcements or supplies for many days. I had to lie, steal and cheat to get artillery support for your initial assault.

Good Luck.

Tournament Overview

You will play a series of three games over the course of the day in the first Dragonfall Bolt Action Tournament, first Bolt Action Second Edition Tournament, and the first Attrition Format Tournament.

Prior to the first game you will be randomly assigned to either RedFor or BlueFor. For each game the Victory Points you earn will also be counted towards your team, the scoring for the teams will determine what mission you will play in subsequent games.

Each game you will take casualties. Those units destroyed will stay destroyed for the entirety of the tournament. Attrition rules are explained in more detail in the Attrition of War section later in this packet. Players are allowed to retreat units off of the battlefield to save them from annihilation.

Tournament Rules

  • The main platoon must have an officer with an equal or greater veterancy rating than 51% of the troops in the platoon.
  • During each game, a player may not field an army greater than 1,000 points.
  • The Bolt Action 2nd Edition Rules will be used for this event.

Army Lists

Each player will bring two platoons. The combined points for each platoon will not exceed 1,500 points.

Note: To ease list building each platoon has been given a range of points that they may consist of.

Main Platoon

  • This platoon will be your primary platoon and will be used in the first game. Subsequent games you will use your reserve platoon to replace any casualties that you may sustain.
  • Must be a generic reinforced platoon consisting of between 991 to 1,000 points.

Reserve Platoon

  • Must be a generic reinforced platoon consisting up to 509 points, as long as the combined value of the two platoons does not exceed 1,500 points.
  • Cannot contain
    • Any additional Headquarter Units besides the platoon commander (FFO, medics, etc.)
    • Any free units granted by your army’s national rules

There are two types of points you will earn or lose throughout the tournament; Strategic Points (SP) and Tactical Points (TP).

Your score for each game will be a combined value of both Strategic Points and Tactical Points. Your team’s points will be the sum of each team member’s Victory Points.

Each Game will be measured by an accumulation of Victory Points to determine the victor of the game. At the end of each game compare the battle points earned by each player.

End of Game Victory Points

If one player has at least two more battle points than their opponent, that player is the winner. If the difference in battle points is not is less than two, then the game is counted as a draw.

Secondary Objectives

Secondary Objectives are present during each game and will add or detract from the overall Victory Points for each game.

Alpha Strike

Be the first player to eliminate an enemy unit in its entirety.

Flawless Victory

Complete the game without losing an entire unit. If an order die is removed from the bag due to a unit being no longer in play, this objective cannot be met.

Remove The Head and The Body Will Perish

Eliminate the enemy’s platoon commander. This objective cannot be met if the enemy commander is retreated off of the field.

When The Fit Hits the Shan

Fail an order or morale check with the result of a FUBAR.

Live to Fight Another Dar

Retreating a unit off of the field, albeit a valid strategy, will result in a penalty to your tactical points for the game. This objective will only be counted once per game, regardless of the number of units that have been retreated.

Supply Caches

Supply Caches do not count towards scoring results, rather are used to aid you in later games to bring up the Clerks & Cooks from the rear echelon to aid in the fighting.

In game one and game two there will be three tokens placed on the board, evenly placed along the center line between the two long table edge.

Capturing Supply Caches

  • These tokens can be captured by any infantry or artillery unit.
  • These tokens cannot be captured by a unit that had forward deployed.
  • The unit must be in base contact with the token at the end of the turn.

Using Captured Supply Caches

Before the start of the second or third game you may turn in captured Supply Caches for the following aids

1 Supply Cache

one 5-man inexperienced rifle team

2 Supply Caches

One 5-man regular rifle team

1 Supply Cache

Reroll one failed order test, the results of the second test must be used. Any roll may only be rerolled once.

3 Supply Caches

Give it another go! One token that can be redeemed after a failed orders test, that order test is automatically passed

The Attrition of War

For this event, each player will bring two Army Lists; one 1,000-point list, acting as the main force of the day, and a secondary reserve list to bolster the losses sustained by the main list.

During the course of a game casualties will be sustained, if an entire unit is eliminated that unit may NOT be brought back for the remainder of the tournament.

Before the second and third game, Players may pull units from their reserve lists to replenish the losses sustained.

  • Units consisting of one or more men at the end of a game will be brought back during the next game at full strength.
  • Flamethrowers that have run out of fuel do not count as being eliminated and will return the next game.
  • ALL units from the main list MUST partake in each battle unless they have been completely wiped out.
  • No reserve unit may be added to the main list if its point value would cause the main list to be over 1,000 points.
  • Units that have broken due to failed moral checks are considered to be eliminated and cannot take the field again for the remainder of the tournament.

You may choose to retreat a unit off of the battlefield to bring them back in the next game.

To retreat a unit, you must issue them a run or advance order and if any model moves off of the table edge within your half of the table the whole unit is removed from the table.

  • Units that have retreated are not counted as destroyed and will return for the next game at full strength.
  • Retreating a unit activated the Live to Fight Another Day Secondary objective.

Happy New Year! 2016 is in and we take a moment to reflect on 2015 and ponder on 2016.

Mercenary Miniatures would like to wish all of you a happy and safe new year!

As a company we set our sights on continuing our growth from last year. We aren’t the type of company that looks at sales figures and projections, we look at what we did and what impact we played on the tabletop wargaming community. Last year we helped with Adepticon‘s Bolt Action tournament by providing a German Subpen board to play on, at Operation Sting 2015 we brought the sub pen and  debuted a German experimental weapons facility board. Chris ran monthly Bolt Action tournaments at Draxtar Games in Batavia, IL and co-ran the Warhammer tournament at Dragonfall.

As 2016 is now upon us we want to take a moment for each of us to share our retrospective of 2015

This year on my end has been very marketing oriented. With the further development of our podcast, Windy City Wargaming and the constant upkeep of relations with local retailers, rounded out with growing the Mercenary Miniatures commission painting customer base, it’s been a busy year.

-Chris Pawl

2015 has been a rollercoaster of ideas and ambition. We’ve laid out a lot of our ground work for our production process for our upcoming product lines. We’ve met many new people both at events and through the amazing internet communities, and I’ve painted plenty of models, played games way too little. I spent a good amount of time working on the backend of our website, working out our new logo and all of our graphics. We procured a 3D printer to assist in prototyping and spent way too much time sitting on a chair watching the 3D printer work as I marveled at today’s technology. I managed to get the opening title sequence for our youtube channel finalized just in time for the new year. And lastly, We closed out Windy City Wargaming with the announcement of a new biweekly release schedule for new episodes.

-Mark Halberg

A new year and a new set of challenges, here’s what we see for the future of Mercenary Miniatures and Windy City Wargaming

My goals for 2016 are to continue making positive strides with the podcast and growing both Windy City Wargaming and Mercenary Miniatures reputations in the hobby community. As of right now, I will be running the Warhammer 40k GT at the second Dragon-Fall in the autumn of 2016 and will be attending Adepticon where I will be submitting at least one model into Crystal Brush, if not just for exposure.

-Chris Pawl

The new year has many new opportunities for us, we have big plans and big ambitions, I’ve already cleared my schedule for Adepticon, Operation Sting, and Dragonfall. I may not be participating in all events but I will be present for them. I am looking to attend little wars and some other conventions in the new year. I have plenty of time committed to getting our products up on the website and ready to aid everyone in the community. I want to see Mercenary Miniatures start working with some charities to give back as much love and support that we have received since our early days in 2014. I look forward to plenty of great times in 2016

And I vow to do my best to make my posts less of a rambling collection of loosely related sentences and form a more coherent train of thought in 2016!

-Mark Halberg

Thank you for all of your support,
Chris Pawl, Ryan Miller, and Mark Halberg

[WIP] Pacific Island

After Operation Sting 2015 we are looking at making a new board for the Bolt Action events at Adepticon 2016.

I started a test for a Pacific Island themed board, this is a 6 in. wide by 12 in. deep segment and was used as a proof of concept for the basic terrain needed for the board, and to test colors, techniques and to work out a procedure to use for the full board.

Flora was excluded from this example.

A Work in progress shot of some IJA infantry for Bolt Action

I have started building an IJA force for my roommate in order to get him rolling dice with us up at Draxtar.

Here is a shot of the first five infantry models. I am using the Army Painter system, which after a few failed attempts on my own models, is really starting to produce pleasing results.

Once they are based these guys will be ready for any tournament and would be a prime example of our Advanced Tabletop level of painting.

I will post more photos as more models reach the final stage.

Stay tuned for updates and contact us if you want an army painted that you will be proud to field on the battlefield.

Thanks for reading,

Intel reports approaching updates!

It has been some time since I have posted anything, and I can say that I sure have missed you people!

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update of what has been going on behind the scenes at Mercenary Miniatures.

Firstly, we have been in Wargaming Illustrated! That is right; the internationally distributed magazine solely dedicated to our beloved hobby of wargaming has shown off the table we built for the Bolt Action Tournament at Adepticon 2015! I would suggest that you grab a copy of the June 2015 issue to read all about it!

Secondly, you may have noticed that the appearance of the site just changed. You, my friend, are very perceptive! I have recently changed the theme of our website so that we may install the necessary components for our up and coming Online Store!

Online store? Wait what is this about an online store? Mercenary Miniatures is a commission painting company!

Not for much longer!

Well, we still will be, but we are expanding our dedication to the tabletop wargaming community by initiating a line of products designed specifically for the needs of continuing the fight and rolling the dice. All our products will be designed in house and made right here is the USA!

Stay tuned for more information as I slowly leak information and photos of what you could expect to see in your shopping cart soon!

Happy Hunting!
